What should my learners be able to do, and to what depth?
Bloom's taxonomy of learning objectives helps you to formulate learning objectives in a clear, structured and practical way according to the depth of knowledge required. This is very helpful in education and training in order to move from pure โknowledgeโ to independent action in the workshop. ๐งโ๏ธ
It is named after the American psychologist and educationalist Benjamin Bloom, who developed it together with others in 1956.
๐ค What is the depth of knowledge according to Bloom?
The taxonomy divides learning objectives into six levels โ from simple memory recall to complex problem solving.
๐ Important: The higher the level, the more demanding the learning performance of the learners.
๐ต๐ผ The 6 levels
1๏ธโฃ Recall facts & terms
Learners can reproduce facts.
๐น Typical verbs: name, list, describe
๐น Example: โThe learner can list the personal protective equipment required for drilling.โ ๐ฆบ
2๏ธโฃ Explain connections
Knowledge is understood and reproduced in the learner's own words.
๐น Typical verbs: explain, elaborate, summarise
๐น Example: โThe trainee can explain why cooling is used during drilling.โ โ๏ธ
3๏ธโฃ Apply in practice
Now it's time to get hands-on ๐จ
๐น Typical verbs: carry out, apply, adjust
๐น Example: โThe apprentice can correctly adjust and operate a drill press.โ ๐ฉ
4๏ธโฃ Analysing problems
Learners reflect on their actions.
๐น Typical verbs: analyse, compare, distinguish
๐น Example: โThe apprentice can analyse the causes of an unclean drill hole.โ ๐ง
5๏ธโฃ Justify decisions
This is about professional assessment and responsibility.
๐น Typical verbs: assess, evaluate, justify
๐น Example: โThe apprentice can justify their choice of the appropriate drill bit for different materials.โ โ๏ธ
6๏ธโฃ Develop your own solutions
The highest level ๐
๐น Typical verbs: plan, develop, construct
๐น Example: โThe trainee can independently create a complete work plan for a complicated metal workpiece.โ ๐
๐ ๏ธ Why is this important for you as a trainer?
โ Learning levels and goals become clear and verifiable
โ You can make tasks more challenging in a targeted manner
โ Theory and practice are neatly linked
โ Ideal if you want to use the AI features of MLS to generate questions/forms.
๐ก Practical tip for your everyday training
๐ Combine several levels!
Good instruction often starts with remembering facts and terms and ends with developing your own solutions.
๐ Example instruction โDrillingโ:
Test knowledge ๐ง
Explain function
Perform work ๐ง
Evaluate result
This way, your trainees not only learn what, but also why and how ๐ This is also reflected in the complete action model, which you can ideally map with MLS.
