Learning journeys help you to map out larger training sections in a clear and structured way β for example, a course, a six-month training period or a complex project.
Instead of lots of individual tasks, your learners are given a common thread to guide them.
Important: Learning journeys are available to you if you have Enterprise licences in MLS.
What is a learning journey? π
A learning journey is an overarching learning framework that bundles several pieces of content in a meaningful way. It can consist of:
π Learning tasks (e.g. based on the complete action model)
π οΈ Projects (compilation of learning tasks for more time-consuming, practical tasks)
π Elective areas (your learners choose for themselves)
When are learning journeys useful? π€
Use learning journeys especially if you:
want to map out a six-month training period
are planning a larger training programme or course
want to structure extensive project work
want to give trainees more personal responsibility
In short: whenever learning is more than just a single task.
How to create a learning journey π§©
1οΈβ£ Plan the process
β
Before you start creating a learning journey, make a plan of what you want it to look like.
β
What should the order of the learning tasks/projects be? Which learning tasks follow which? You can do this the traditional way on a pinboard or use digital tools. A Word file is perfectly adequate for this.
β
2οΈβ£ Prepare learning tasks & projects
To create learning journeys, you need to have all the building blocks β i.e. learning tasks & projects β well prepared. These must be ready in MLS so that you can then incorporate them graphically into your learning journey.
β
βHere you will find tips on how to structure your learning tasks effectively. It's just like in training: a well-prepared workplace is half the battle!
β
3οΈβ£ Create a learning journey
Once you have completed steps 1 and 2, you can easily put together your learning journey in MLS.
To do this, create a new one by clicking on βCreate learning journeyβ.
β
Give the learning journey a title and select a profession (you can create new professions in the Administration area if you have not already done so). You can also add a description if you wish.
β
In most cases, you will start the learning journey with learning tasks. Here you can see how to create two learning tasks in your learning journey and then link them graphically. Instead of learning tasks, you could also use projects.
β
Of course, you can always rearrange everything and delete connections between elements.
You can see how to add an elective area here. Decide how many of the tasks/projects in this area your learners should complete. In this example, learners should complete two of the three learning tasks in the elective area. They can choose which ones themselves.
β
Note: Everything is always saved directly in your learning journey! βοΈ
Of course, you can create as many of these connections as you like, so that even really extensive courses/training programmes can be mapped out.
As with the learning tasks, you can see how your learners will see it later.
The last step is to activate the learning journey for your learners. To do this, click on the βBack to listβ button to return to the overview of all learning journeys.
From there, you can assign it to individual learners or groups.
β
Learning journeys can only be deleted if they have not yet been assigned.
How can I track my learners' progress on their learning journey? π΅πΌ
As a learning guide, you have your own section called βAssigned learning journeysβ. Here, you can always see where your learners are in the learning journey. This allows you to filter directly by users who are in the learning journey.
You can also assess learning tasks directly from this view.
β
Advantages of learning trips π
π§ Clear structure over longer periods of time
π Better overview for your trainees and you as a learning guide
π Holistic, action-oriented learning
π Flexible combination of compulsory and optional tasks
Conclusion π
Learning journeys are your tool for making training meaningful, modern and practical. They combine structure with flexibility and give trainees guidance without restricting them.
π Ideal for anyone who wants to think of training not as individual parts, but as a real learning journey.
Have fun designing your learning journeys in MLS2! π
